On the frontier, tools varied with time, place, and occupation. In agriculture, of course, settlers depended on the plow. If they turned to ranching, they needed a lariat (or rope), a branding iron, and a pair of pliers. If they took up mining, they carried a pickax, a screen, and a skillet.
