Wind is the horizontal movement of air. Wind speeds in hurricanes and typhoons exceed 120 km/h near the storm’s center and may approach 320 km/h. The highest wind speeds at the surface of the Earth — as high as 480 km/h — occur in tornadoes. Except for these storms, wind speed usually increases with height to the top of the troposphere.
